I Love Fowey
Fowey (Pronounced: Foy).
Fowey is a gorgeous and quaint little town. I absolutely adore tiny villages that you have to go to five different stores (I mean shoppes) to get just one meal. I thought it was so cool! The best shoppes were the candy shoppe (duh!!), the Mini Market, the bakery, the butcher and the book shoppes. There were more than three book shoppes. The sweets (candy) shoppe was a teeny-weeny little store packed full of candy! The shoppe was probably 10 by 15 feet. Not very big. There was hardly any space to move! And there were only 6 people (including the cashier) in the store. No one else could fit. Bryan and Dad had to wait outside. The Mini Market is kind of like a variety-grocery store mix. It is the only grocery store in town. The bakery was full of cookies, scones, bread, baguettes, sandwiches, turnovers and pasties. The butcher sold meat and cheese. The meat from the giant 6-foot pasty came from the butcher. I’ll tell you more about that later. The book shoppes, oh the lovely bookshoppes. If you know me, you know that I LOVE books! So, having over 3 books shoppes in a small town that you could walk across and around in about 15 minutes (going slowly) is a pretty decent amount!! The more books, the better, is what I say.
Fowey had only three pasty shoppes. Which is very few for a town that has annual celebration on the pasty. Falmouth had over 8 pasty shoppes. Now onto the Pasty Festival…The Fowey Carnival and Royal Regatta. Fowey has a not-so-famous Pasty (p-ah-stee) festival. A pasty is a pastry with meat, potato and swede (sweet potato) filling. They can also have a much sweeter filling like apple and custard, rhubarb and custard or apple and black currant (my favourite). This festival is where the whole town gets involved, whether it’s making costumes, being in the parade or dressing up as something sea like for work. Workers in the stores had to dress up and then the judges would look at you, your co-workers and your store and see if you were a winner. The theme this year was “The Sea”. The festival also had a pasty eating contest. Where people could come up and try and eat a 1 lb. pasty in the fastest time. The winner ate this huge pasty in about 52 seconds. Ugh! It was too gross for me! They would shovel it down their throats. Some people didn’t even swallow. The highlight at the end of the week was the giant 6-foot pasty that arrived in town by boat. The town band brought the pasty in. Then the festival queen cut the pasty for everyone to see. Volunteers handed out pieces of pasty to all the children. It was delicious! Although it was a bit peppery for me. We had a great time in Fowey and enjoyed watching all the fun stuff around us. The week ended with a wonderful fireworks show, that we watched from our boat.
To me, Fowey was one of the highlights of Ye ol’ England, coming close to Dittisham and seeing Her Majesty, The Queen in Dover.
