Life Aboard Masala

When I get up in the morning, I usually pull out my book and start reading. The rest of the family does the same. Then I get changed or eat breakfast. I close my curtain and get dressed in my bunk. I get my clothes from a shelf in my bunk. Breakfast is normally dried toast (toasties) or real toast that Dad toasts on the stove. Sometimes we have cold cereal or hot oatmeal. On special occasions, we have Dutch Pannekoeken (thin pancakes) with real Canadian maple syrup.

I sometimes start the day off with schoolwork, other days we do jobs around the boat like grocery shopping, cleaning, filling water tanks and laundry. Often we get into talking with people from around the world like Greece, New Zealand, U.S.A., U.K., Holland, Germany and France. We have even met one or two boats from Canada. We also go on field trips. Porto, Lisbon and Monchique were our most recent trips inland. We go to art galleries, zoos, aquariums, churches and cathedrals, museums, cemeteries, hikes in the country, and historic sites.

I do my schoolwork in various areas around the boat. If it is sunny and hot, I sit on the foredeck and do my schoolwork, but if it is breezy and still sunny, I sit in the cockpit. Mostly, I work in my bunk, in the v-berth or at the table in the main cabin. When we are sailing, I don’t usually get any homework done because I get seasick.

After dinner, we clean up, do the dishes and if we have time we play games, watch a DVD or have some friends over for a visit. In my free time, I like to do needlepoint, read or play with new friends.

So this is a typical day in the life of me.
